A 50-year-old woman allegedly shot her husband in a Washington, D.C., hotel after he was accused of molesting children at the day care she runs.
According to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, on Thursday, July 22, at 7:40 p.m., officers from the First District responded to a shooting call on the 1300 block of Maryland Avenue Southwest and found a male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The man was transported to a hospital for life-threatening injuries.
Police learned the shooting was allegedly “domestic in nature,” and arrested Shanteari Weems for assault with intent to kill. The shooting reportedly occurred at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
Four days after he was shot, Baltimore County Police announced they issued a warrant for James Weens Jr.’s arrest. The police department said they received allegations that James “sexually abused at least three children while working at a day care facility located in Owings Mills.”
He reportedly waived extradition from D.C. and will appear before a Baltimore County Court judge next week.
According to The Baltimore Sun, James worked for the Baltimore Police Department and retired in 2005. He reportedly has been charged with three counts each of sexual abuse involving a minor, second-degree assault, third-degree sexual offense, and fourth-degree sexual offense. He reportedly also faces one charge of displaying obscene material to a minor.
Shanteari reportedly runs the day care, Lil Kidz Kastle, where the alleged abuse occurred. She allegedly told police she met up with her husband to confront of about “accusations of child molestation in Maryland.”
She allegedly wrote in a notebook she wanted to shoot “but not kill” her husband because she wanted “these kids to get justice.”
The Baltimore Sun reports Lil Kidz Kastle shut down the day before James Weems was shot.
According to WJZ-TV, a judge denied Shanteari bond during a hearing Friday.
